Very first scooter, Vespa LX150... shiny black.

What helmet should I purchase? One with a chin wrap around? Open face, visor or complete shield... I am so confused!

Thanks for any advice!

Opinions vary. My own recent exp. with crashes as well as the word of experienced riders/paramedics says "FULL FACE ONLY, BY RESPECTED NAME BRAND"

The fun person in me sees people riding in shorts and sunglasses and says "boy, that looks nice...."

I am very fond of Scorpion helmets, as they are reasonable and well made (saved my face a couple weeks back!) without costing $600. each one fits your head differently, so I would check out a variety of them. Make sure it's comfortable enough that you won't justify not wearing it.

Otherwise, get at least a 3/4 helmet. Bugs hitting your face at speed is painful!

I promise no more soapbox! Enjoy the new scoot, I've seen them, gorgeous!

I agree with full face coverage helmets & Name brand.
We bough HJC model CL-16 which we like. They work well for people who wear glasses.

After starting with a 3/4 helmet, moving up to the FF, now I feel so bare when using my old 3/4 helmet.
I seaved it for parades and such where you don't move fast enough to get a breeze (in Summer).

Also we wear gloves, which cut the sting from getting hit by rocks and bugs.

Actually, we do ATGATT.

Scoot Safely,

Gloves help cut the sting if you hit the ground, or your arm goes through the windshield, too, lol. Gloves are good!

Shawn, welcome! You chose a great scooter. Try on as many helmets as you can. Hopefully the Vespa dealer and other motorcycles shops in the area have a decent selection you can try out. The one you should buy is the one that is comfortable, that you like, and that you will wear....whatever style it is. Helmets are a popular topic; up on the top right there's a search box....type in helmets, and you'll come across several threads, many with pictures, that may help with ideas.

Helmets are all about personal preference. I have a Nolan modular, because I wanted the bright yellow for visibility. The modular is heavier, but I love the flip up feature for everyday riding. On longer trips, I am more apt to grab my Suomy or Arai full face, each purchased (at discounts) solely because I liked the graphics. I have an HJC half helmet that is wonderfully comfortable, but since retiring an HJC 3/4 and KBC full face due to crashes, can't bring myself to wear much. They were both $100 helmets that did just what they were supposed to do. DOT approval is the standard in this country; some helmets are also SNELL approved. SNELL is more a racing standard. Some feel it's better than DOT, some think it's overkill. Again, personal opinion.

The FB link said the content was unavailable....was it a picture of your new scoot? Be sure to use the "public" link that is waaaaaaaaay down at the bottom of photo album pages. FB kindly provides a link you can give your friends, whether they are on FB or not.

Hi Shawn and welcome. I concur with everyone. I have a Fulmer full face modular in pink and white. When I chose it I was a beginner also and the clerk said "Paramedics LOVE these helmets!" made me feel REAL secure and self confident. :)))))))))) I also have a 3/4s helmet that I wear at times when my neck bothers me and the modular feels too heavy. Do I feel safer in it? No, but I have less pain so I hope the trade off is worth the trouble.

I'll add to pick yourself a pair of good comfortable riding boots. Make sure they come up well over your ankles. Leather. Heels not too high. You want to protect your feet and ankles in case of a crash.

Enjoy the new scooter and the scooter experience!

I suppose it depends on where you will be riding. I ride in the city, not in the country. Accordingly, I wear a 3/4. It has a pull down clear visor. I think I would look stupid with a big 'ol fullface on my brightly colored scooter, riding downtown at 20mph. I like the mod scooter style/culture; you wouldnt see one of them in a fullface. That being said, make sure its DOT approved!

Its all a matter of personal preference, as someone already mentioned. You must come to your own decision :)

Hi!!
I just bought my first scooter two weeks ago (Yamaha 2009 Vino 125) only had 1 mile on the showroom floor, color is Raspberry.
I am 50 years old and have been driving him (Howard) to work daily. I am a “The Big Bang Theory” fan. LoL
My brother who owns a Harley made me drive in a school parking lot and around bottles practicing before I drove on the main roads.
I just love driving my scooter. :D
I look forward to reading other comments.
