Last Saturday, April 14, 2012 was an awsome day to ride in southeastern CT. The day was sunny and warm, like a summer day. Very unusual for this area in April. It was the first ride over 10 miles for Silvano since last fall.
I took my DH to the Vanilla Bean Cafe in Pomfret, CT for lunch. It is about 40 miles from home and a lovely rustic restaurant with good food. It has also become a favorite spot with the riding crowd. I was surprised to see so many riders there so early in the season. There was a large group of women from the Motor Maids club from RI along with lots of single riders, 2 uppers, and small groups. All the outside tables were full and many of the inside tables too, but we found a lovely spot inside in front of an open window. The roast beef sandwich and cup of corn chowder were excellent, along with the good coffee.
This ride is one of my favorites. CT Route 169 has a scenic designation and lives up to it. It goes through small towns, past farms and has enough curves to satisfy most riders. At this time of year, the spring shrubs and flowers are in bloom and the trees are beginning to bud. If you are ever out in eastern CT, I highly recommend Route 169 for a great ride. It is about 50 miles from Norwich to the MA line.
