Hey all,
My Tmax is due in about 15 miles for an oil and filter change. According to the manual and Tmax forums, one needs a special tool to get the filter off and many people have beat the crap out of the old filter trying to remove it. People say the filter is in too tight to remove properly. I wanted to do the first oil/filter change, but now I'm thinking it is it better to have the dealership do it. If your bike is covered under warranty can you still do the work yourself? I'm really not wanting to spend the $ but I'm thinking that I may have to this time. I wonder if the dealership would sell me the wrench tool for next time? Anyone gone through this dilemma?
Thanks,
Alisa

I had my first service done by the dealer. If the 1st service was done elsewhere it would have voided my warranty. Also, they did a 40 something point check to make sure everything was as it should be. 'twas worth my spending. Good luck!

If my husband wasn't such a good mechanic I would have taken both of my scooters in to a dealer. There are many things that are picked up on during the first oil change which, if done by the appropriate scooter mechanic, is much more than an oil change but actually a service. I've heard tales of people who upon their first service discovered the dealer did not do the P.D.I. properly on the scooter to begin with...scary stuff.

It's not unusual to have a special "wrench" to remove canister type oil filters found on different bikes or cars. Some bikes use a cartridge filter that is inserted into the engine via an access cover. Cartridge type oil filters are basically just a metal can with a metal/fiber filter material inside. It's not hard to squash the can if you just grab onto it with a big set of pliers or whatever. Once you squash the can getting it off can be more tricky. Don't ask how I know that... If you damage the sealing surface that the filter screws down to then life get$ a lot more complicated. I bought an oil filter wrench for my Gold Wing. $9 was what it cost if I recall correctly. An oil filter is definitely one of those areas where it's good to have the correct tool for the job. The one for the T-Max looks like this and fits over the end of the filter and uses a socket wrench for operation: http://shop.wemoto.com/pictures.dyn?u=2147904qqq5828537Doug

Thanks All,
I'm going to make an appointment for 40 point checkup/oil/filter change for my first 600 miles. From there on, I'd like to change everything I can myself. Thanks Doug for the pic of the wrench, I'm going to ask the dealer if they carry it when I drop off stingher and compare the $ to online.

Hey all, Stingher had her 600 mile checkup today and passed with flying colors. I do have one My Tmax has a flashing oil indicator light that flashes when your oil needs changed. I tried following the steps in the manual and the oil light will not go off. Does anyone else have an oil indicator light? It tells me to take it back to the dealer if it doesn't shut off - maybe it's a loose fuse Alisa

Alisa -
It's not a loose fuse. Loose fuses blow fast! I'd take her back to the dealer they didn't do something right. AND ask them what the cause was so you will know when you change the oil next time!

DeejayDebi, I did not fully go through the sequence. I realized that my odometer was not showing at all so when I added that into the sequence it worked. Alisa
