Hi!

I have a People 50 that I bought used this fall. It's behaving like the clutch is slipping (shuddering on takeoff, slow acceleration) so I pulled the clutch out tonight to clean it (it's dirty too). I'm thinking about replacing/upgrading the springs in there as well.

Inside the clutch right now is a red torque (big) spring and yellow clutch (little) springs. I'm curious to find out if these are stock, or if someone else already did some tinkering in the clutch. Anyone out there know what springs the stock clutch should have inside?

Thanks!!
~Jen

Jen, did you get an answer to your question yet? Is it the 2T model?

Here's a place you can look at parts:
http://www.kymcoparts123.com/pages/part ... 2godVz-AHA

Here is a service manual you can download:

Holler, if you don't have your answer already, and maybe we can round up some Kymco type fellers that can offer advice.

Deb

Hi Deb!

I have not found an answer to this question yet. :( I have the 2t model.

I looked through the parts catalog and service manual but I didn't see the specs for the stock springs in there. The red big spring is rated at 2000RPM's and the little springs are rated at 1500RPM's.

I did replace them, like color/rating for like and noticed a drastic improvement in performance, though it's still not performing as well as I expect this scooter to perform. I also noticed a significant difference in length of the big spring - the old one was nearly 2cm shorter than the new. I did not use OEM parts.

This is my second 2009 People 50 2t, I bought my first one new, and it was stolen after a year. Booo. :( My original People 50 2t was super zippy and I could easily reach 45mph on a flat. I bought a used People 50 after that and it doesn't come near performing the way my old one did. I have a friend, also with a 2009 People 50 2t that rides as good as my old one did, so I use it for performance comparison with my "new" one.

Before changing springs, my scooter would shudder on take off, as if the clutch was slipping. Between around 15-25mph I would lose power, then from 25 - 35 it would accelerate again to a max of about 38-40. Forget climbing even the smallest hill.

After changing springs, it accelerates very smoothly through all power bands with no shuddering. My max speed is now only 35mph. Hills are still tough.

I have 7gm rollers in the variator, I'm planning on putting the stock (8.5gm) rollers back in to see if it improves one way or another, as soon as I find the time.

Any other ideas of how to get my poor scooter performing the way it should be would be awesome!

:)

Let me ask around and see if anyone can help. Also, you might put a call in to these folks; they are experts at the sort of thing you're doing...

One friend sent me this response:
She doesn't mention the plate ramp (the piece that the weights "roll" in), the piece slides (the three little triangular plastic pieces that the plate ramp ride on) or the condition of the belt. How many miles are on the scoot? It does sound like she working in the right area though.

Hi! Thanks so much for asking around! I'm glad to hear I'm on the right track!! Now I just need to find the time to do the work! hehe

It has 2500 miles on it. The plate ramp is clean and in very good shape. The plastic triangle slides are brand new, they came with the 7gm rollers I put in there. The belt is also brand new - the first thing I did when I got the scoot was replace the belt and stock rollers like for like (and clean everything in there), and I tried the lighter roller weights before taking the clutch apart, so the stock rollers I'm planning on putting back in are also new.

Again, thanks!!!

His suggestion after your answer:

If it were me I would start the bike with the CVT cover off (the starter pinion will need to be held in place with a screwdriver). This way the the operation of the CVT can be observed. It sounds like something is sticking.

I have another friend I will ask as soon as I catch up with him; he's working out of town. There's also a Yahoo group for Kymco, and a Kymco owner's forum.

Thanks for all of your help!

This weekend I was able to replace the rollers back to the 9gm factory weights. My top speed is now 38-40. It's not as zippy from a stop than my other one waws, but it can climb a hill and still accelerate, which is a million times better than it was.
