A few more weeks till Thanksgiving.
We did this a couple of years ago and would be fun to do it again.
Does anyone have any out of the ordinary traditions for Thanksgiving?
Here is my family tradition:
Roasted Turkey (Goes without saying)
Gravy
Mashed potatoes
Mashed Turnips (I'ts not Thanksgiving without turnips!!!!)
Creamed onions (I know it's tradition but YUCK)
Green Bean Casserole
A green salad
Cranberry and Orange relish
And for dessert: Pumpkin pie, Apple Pie, Mince Pie, English Trifle (which we always called Tipsy cake)
FOOTBALL!!!!!

Wednesday: Pie Day. Making pies. Dinner is Hors-d'oeuvres and a wine tasting party. Thursday: Thanksgiving-in-a-box from the local supper market...hey, if you haven't tried it, don't knock it. They are not half bad and beats spending 8-9 hours making a meal that takes 15 minutes to eat. Friday: Turkey enchiladas...uses up most of the left over turkey
My favorite non-traditional addition to Thanksgiving is a great Corn-broccoli casserole side dish.
And I like my niece's mashed turnips, too.

Growing up I always HATED that cranberry stuff from a can. But, my partner introduced me to how good cranberries can actually be. She is one of those experimental cooks that maybe starts with a recipe, but then adds this and that and maybe some of that too, and it almost always turns out amazing.
Cranberry Relish (the starting point) bag of fresh cranberries 1 cup of sugar or so 1 cup of orange juice zest of one orange simmer until cranberries are soft, if more liquid is needed use water mods include slivered almonds, or maybe almond extract, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon...
this is now my favorite part of the t-day dinner. Ellen, is this what your cranberry relish is like?
One year we also had some cranberry stuffing cornbread stuffing chicken stock dried cranberries slivered almonds
That is a big hit too.
I always have to balance asking for my old favorites and leaving room for her to create new favorites! with meals like this, I am more than happy to clean the kitchen.
