I don't really have an organized group of scooterist in my city, but I think I might like to change that. I would love to hear from anyone on how to start something up. I see people driving around all the time and scooters parked around town everywhere. Totally have no ideas on how to get started or what clubs really do, besides organizing rides maybe once a month. Anyone who has organized clubs or group activities I would love to hear tips on what to do. And anyone involved in a club please share anything you do.
Thanks,
Lauren

The first thing we did here was to start one. Think of a name and some of the things you would like to see the club do for people. Then, let all of the scooter shops in town know. See if you can post something in the store or make up small handouts for them to give to people or people can pick up when they visit the store. Leave some of them on scooters that you see around town. And don't expect a HUGE response. I have over 80 names and email addresses in the one club that I oversee here and if I get 10-15 of them to show up, then it was a great day! Another I do is tap into the the biker events. We try to do the poker runs, Blue Star Mothers events, cancer research rides, parades and just about any fundraiser that we catch wind of. It is an event put together and all they are looking for are participants. Good luck with your adventure!

Yes Ive been very active in two clubs the best way to get members is this...get out to organized rides and shows and always have a flyer or a info card on you. We grew our club from 3 to over 100 but dont be disapointed if you only get a small number of "core" riders that is normal. I think in our current club we have 80 members and regular attendees are about 30 for big events and rides mostly around 10 - 15.

I have led many many rides which we (hubby) thought up. We usually go to a place thats something neat to see or tour heres some of the stuff we did or planned and got rained out...... Gettysburg ride, Yuengling Brewery ride, centrailia ride, Cape May weekend , Poconos weekend, corn maze, Ride for kids, Philly scooter rally, scooter racing, Toys for tots ,meet and greet new members, . We usually include stopping for a meal since we all are middle aged or better and ejoy eating. Plus it gives you more time together to get to know each other!
Need more help let me know....
Also get a few sponsors that always helps!

Thanks for all the info. I started a Facebook page and literally in 24 hours have 60 people "signed up". Before I even tried to get in touch with the local scooter shop they were emailing me. I guess everyone was kinda waiting on someone else to start something (I know I was). And still anyone else with any ideas I'm still happy to hear them.

Lauren

It used to be that when you wanted to start a club, you used to use Yahoo groups which I don't think any uses anymore. Facebook is the new Yahoo Groups.

Our club here in FL just switched to Facebook from Yahoo. I personally like the more private chat forum on Yahoo, but the "younger" crowd think you can't beat Facebook.

BTW, I think there's been a thread or two in general chat here on SD about forming up clubs and keeping them going.

Lauren, where is your club located?

There is a yahoo group for my area. However, it has been taken over by spammers. Any activity there might have been is pretty much gone now because of that. By the way I live in Baton Rouge, LA.

You can email the owner of the Baton Rouge group directly (should be contact info on the home page), and ask to turn the group over to you....or to be a moderator....and then clean the group out. Or you could at least post a link to your new Facebook page. NOLA used to have the Jedi Knights..Scoot New Orleans seems to be an active group...there's a guy on Myspace from Slidell promoting Vesparazzis...

LA also has:

Maybe you can gain inspiration from one of those groups, or one of them will have a ride towards your area you could join.

Best of luck to you!

I didn't think about asking to moderate the yahoo group, that's a good idea. I posted links on it and only had one person reply, he said, "I stay away from those sites." I guess he was talking about Facebook? I think a lot of the scoot NO forum and east TX peeps are already on my Facebook page. Although, I've never heard of the Slidell group. Hopefully once we get established with a good base I would like to work with those guys. Do something like a joint ride somewhere at a half way point for both clubs. I know all these areas already have rallies, it would be cool to bring a club to them. Not everyone show up separately, which is what I've seen. Amerivespa is coming up in June in NOLA, I hope by then we have some people to take (we should). Thanks for your suggestions. I tried searching for the topics you mentioned, I think my eyes got crossed from searching, I couldn't find them.

Thanks,
Lauren

This should get you started...I never know what my family's schedule will bring, but maybe we'll cross paths next year in NOLA. I'm hoping to make it to Amerivespa. Good luck!
