Well, it's starting to get very hot again and I'm feeling the need for a summer helmet And those jerks at Shoei have discontinued my J-Wing, which got a bit bashed when my scooter fell on top of it Soooo, after glaring at the current crop of 3/4 helmets, I decided to resuscitate my old HJC IS-33 This is a great helmet, but it starts to get too loud to wear without earplugs at ~40 mph and it gets too loud to wear even WITH earplugs at ~60 mph ...At least it used to get too loud (This is my answer to those marvelous posts that Bexx has been making about her projects and that have been making me soooo jealous of her skilz) Steps to soundproof my helmet: 1. Secured $4.99 worth of dense foam (aka doorknob hangers) at the Hobby Lobby 2. Removed the cheek pads from my helmet and made a paper template of the large hollow section in them 3. Used the template to cut out foam pieces of the same size 4. Checked the foam pieces for size 5. Installed the foam pieces and noticed that a double thickness of foam would fit You can see the foam peeking out from behind the liner, inside the helmet: 6. Made a second set of foam pieces and installed a double layer of foam This worked great! (Edit: you can read another version of this, complete with a formal description of my testing process & the results at: http://modernvespa.com/forum/topic80652 )

That's a great idea. I have a j-wing and it's a little noisey. I had ear surgery a few months ago and the wind seems a bit loud now. I was thinking about wearing ear plugs with it.
Shoei discontinued the j-Wing ? Damn skippy, I love my helmet. I'll have to be careful with it since I can't replace it.

Really liked your idea. Went to check my helmet to see if I could modify it. But the liner is all one piece and there isn't enough room around the ears to add more insulation. I guess I will just have to continue wearing ear plugs.

I have a new AFX helmet and it is a 3/4 one and it is so quiet. you may want to look into those type of helmets. I posted a picture of it on another forum on here. hope that this helps. It is really cool too, with the vents. even at low speeds it almost feels like you have a ac on your head.

I'll keep it in mind next time I need a helmet.

Golly I hope this works for my CL-15 HJC helmet I just bought.....It is VERY loud so heading to JoAnn's Fabrics tomorrow to look for some dense plastic to try this out! Everyone said this HJC was a good helmet and no one mentioned about how loud they were.....go figure!

Ok, I tried this on my CL-15 helmet and even tho it did quiet it a little I am going to stay with my Vega 3/4 helmet. Not wanting to spend anymore money on helmets I decided to purchase a pink neoprene face mask to wear on cold days. Anyone wearing one of these? I get migraine headaches when cold air hits my forehead. So, I need to prepare for cooler weather because I cannot see me parking Miss Daisy all because it's cold! That would be very depressing and not something I want to do!

They didn't say anything because they would just have gotten a chorus of "but you should be wearing ear plugs!" Before, my HJC helmet was loud, even with ear plugs in.

I get asthma from cold air hitting my lungs, so on cold days, I wear a full-face with a neoprene Respro Foggy mask (which also keeps the visor from fogging up). It's nice and cozy in there Picture from back in NJ (you can see snow in the background):
