I think I saw it today. We were driving through Quincy on our way back to our work home after 5 wonderful days home on the farm when my husband told me to look behind us, there were two sports bikes on our tails.

Sure enough, two sports bikes were approaching on our right. No riding gear on the rider of one bike. He was riding solo but was wearing black jeans and a shirt. Next to him was a second sport bike, this one with two up. Both were painfully young, the guy piloting was wearing long pants and t-shirt. Nobody was wearing a brain bucket and when the young woman riding behind the young guy came into view it made you think that there really wasn't anything upstairs worth protecting with a helmet.

She was wearing short shorts and a clingy little tank top and was literally perched behind the kid driving like a jockey on a race horse. She was leaning completely over him with her hands braced on the gas tank. Her short shorts were, how shall I say this delicately....she was wearing the perfect wedgy. It was one of those moments where I wished I had a camera handy or that there had been a police officer to witness the dangerous situation the young girl had put herself in. She was hanging onto nothing, there was nothing to protect her should something happen to throw her off the bike and seemed blissfully unaware of how much damage rough pavement can do to a perky 19 year old body and a pretty face should one meet the other.

We were on the road on Friday on our Virago.

We covered over 125 miles. It was 90 degrees. We were in leather jackets, boots, long pants, gloves and helmets. We definitely want to protect what few working brain cells we have left in our heads.

Come to think of it, what we saw, wasn't weird, it was a tragedy looking for a place to happen.

Can anybody top this one?

Women in Rome riding with high heels on instead of some kind of sensible footwear. That's about it. Everything else I've seen before. Especially in the summer when the temperatures are 35+ C or more.

1st: Florida. West Palm Beach area. Main artery. 30ish woman riding her Harley Sportster wearing a skirt, short-sleeved top, Candies high heels and a brain bucket. Appeared to be on her way home from work. We DID get a "drive by" picture. I will have to dig it up.

2nd: Urbanish area of NJ. Lower-speed highway. Known for high traffic. Young sport bike guy speeding past us then slowing down to about 50 mph. Good...had some sense. Umm...wait a minute. No. Slowed down to text with one hand while holding on to left grip with other hand while maintaining 50 mph.

As the saying goes, "You can't make this stuff up!"

Well you almost got mine, but I have to say what I saw scared me to death. For the idiot doing it and for myself and the 4 or 5 cars riding behind, beside, and in front of him.

Going down a local interstate and this idiot on a crotch rocket is riding at 70 mph+ doing a wheelie. Not just "popping up". This guy is riding ONLY on his rear tire and poised up in the air at about a 45 degree angle!!!

He was doing this while weaving in and out of traffic in two lanes, all a few car lengths apart, all going at about the same speed.

My thought was "drop back as far as you can", but of course that did not have me feeling any safer. This went on for about 3 miles then he took an exit ramp (still doing a wheelie).

The next night I saw on the local news that a motorcycle rider died on a local interstate while doing a wheelie I wondered if it was the same guy.

Not exactly 2 wheels, but cool / strange / funny none the less:

There used to be a Harley-Davidson dealer a few miles down the road from here (Ernest Cerini H-D of Donora, PA -- the 4th oldest H-D dealer in the world!). Old man Cerini had an early '60's Panhead with a sidecar attached, and he would take that side-hack rig out riding in all kinds of weather... snow, rain, whatever. In the sidecar was always his best friend, a big ol' black Labrador-Shepard. Ol' man Cerini would always have a stogie chomped between his teeth, and the dog would be wearing his custom-made goggles, with his ears & tongue flapping in the wind. I miss seeing them riding around, seemingly without a care in the world. Both have passed on to smoother roads (and hopefully warmer weather).

Cerini H-D opened in 1923, and finally closed down just a few years ago. The building is still there, along with a back room that is rumored to be filled with literally millions of dollars worth of antique Harley-Davidsons & impossible-to-find Harley parts. Many still photographs of the place are shown in the "History Channel" specials that focus on Harleys and / or motorcycles in general.

The worst scooter news I've seen today:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/videogall ... t-in-China

I'm not sure I'd call a car hitting a scooter, or a scooter in China with 5 people a freak incident. Happily, nobody was killed.

On the stupid meter, this is pretty high up there:
http://www.wivb.com/dpp/news/new_york/r ... on-highway
or (same story, different link)
http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/ ... story.html

In actual day to day life, probably the weirdest/funniest thing I've seen was a poor bird in a cage on the back of a motorcycle, heading down I-95. The poor bird was upside down, hanging onto the wire on the top of the cage for all he was worth, feathers aflutter.

I tried the second link but Yahoo News said it wasn't available at this time. :(

I saw another weird thing yesterday on my way to the Post Awful to pick up the mail. One of our senior citizens putting down the street on his little black Zuma with headphone radios on. I think the gentleman is a little on the hard of hearing side on a good day. He passed me, gave me a wave and put put putted down the road. I do know the gentleman. All I could do was shake my head and cross the street.

What's that old saying about God looking after children and fools and folks who ride scooters while wearing earphone radios?

i think the weirdest thing that i have seen is when i go to Florida and there are people with shorts, a light shirt on, boat shoes (gasp! as i am a ALL Gear All The Time girl myself) and no helmet on. of course i probably look a bit weird myself on the road because i have a PINK helmet on with a yellow jacket and a safety vest w/ long jeans and boots on in 90 degree weather when i am on my bike. A bit of water looks better than a whole lot of blood.

The weirdest thing? That would be me in my Vemar Ckqi helmet which is a mix between mantis and power ranger. And it is pink. 'Enough said :D
People doing 90, people riding spots bikes and doing wheelies...The world is filled with morons. I think younger people often have no concept of death and finality of it. It is one of the basic defence mechanisms: we do not think about our own moortality all the time. Else we would go nuts. As we age and face losses of parents, friends we start consciously recognizing the life is not permanent and is in fact quite fragile. We become more careful about what we do and how we do it. Younger people especially those who are into thrill seeking often engage in dangerous behaviors because dying is the last thing they think about. It is sad.....

I have the winner.... there is a man who rides a pink scooter around the town that I work at... he also wears a bright orange hunting jacket while he is driving the pink scooter  it's a little much to take in with the eyes. He putt putts around town going 15 miles per hour in a 25 mile zone, needless to say without the crazy color combination he always has a car or truck right on his tail because he drives too slow. He looks like a doll on a scooter being pushed by a human sized automobile. One of these days I hope I'm outside when he is pushed by my work, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Suzuki, I would pay real money to see that one! :)

I saw a good one last weekend. One of the local cities was having their annual "Heritage Days" celebration which draws thousands of people to the area. We were driving through town and noticed a Harley Club was rumbling into town. There must have been about 50 bikes and in the middle of the group I saw a lone female rider on a bike which impressed the heck out of me. She was young, shapely and instead of wearing gear or at least jeans and leather jackets/vests, she was dressed in Daisy Duke leather shorts, low cut tank top and tight mini vest. Leather gloves, boots to the knee and leather Harley Hat with her hair flowing in the breeze. I didn't know whether to salute her or be shocked. Took guts to wear that get up with a group of Hog riders.
