One of the things that's been really fun about starting to ride a scooter is all the firsts you experience.
The first week of riding I experienced my first lane change, first construction detour, first highway, first beeping the horn to greet fellow scooterists (and getting beeped at by a guy on a big sportbike with a horn sound even wussier/cuter than my Vespa's), etc etc.
Yesterday I experienced my first sneeze while riding. Kinda gross in a helmet. Today I drove right next to a cop pulling someone over. (In Boston, this counts as a first, as it will definitely happen again).
What are some fun firsts you've experienced?

First time I waved at a motorcyclist and he started to wave back,
then realized he was waving at a Vespa
and started desperately searching for something down there
that he could have been reaching for
( Hee-hee-hee! That was fun!! )

Yesterday was a few firsts - my first Thumbs-up from a truck next to me at a stop light, First time someone said "nice wheels", first time a stranger walked up to me asking how much they cost, was milage good, etc... (I've gotten that from people I know, but not a stranger before).

Last night I had my first interstate run (only about a mile, but it was a good first try) and then it started to rain, only a sprinkle but also a first. Thinking about both of those firsts scared me, but I'm glad I got them both out of the way.

Oh yes! You just reminded me...
The first time I commuted to work on the scooter in the rain!!
That was a really big first for me!
(And the first time I commuted back home in snow... well, let's not go there )

My favorite first (and still favorite) was being waved at by a cruiser,
first time riding down our steep road,
first time riding sweeping S curves,
first time beeping (cute little beeps, not blares) at bicycles to share the road because they couldn't hear my scooter engine,
first time commuting to the bus stop
and my second favorite: first time riding with someone else!
My next first will be tomorrow: first time commuting to work from Ned to Boulder so I can get my scooter's first oil change!

Oh Ellen! I'm so sorry for you! Yes, there are some firsts that we wish we could make the last, such as being cut off on a corner ....
On the other hand, I'm really enjoying being able to smell pine and fecund wet humus, sweet blooming bushes, and even fresh horse manure... being in a cage or a bus, I miss all of these delicious smells!

First time parking next to a giant cruiser motorcycle. Also first time parking next to a giant SUV that got a ticket. The driver was fuming so much I was afraid he was gonna ram me if I didn't get out of there quick enough. Sucker.

Another first - Riding in the rain.
Forecast is for scattered showers then clearing, so I couldn't see driving the car today. It was barely past misting when I left for work, then it started coming down a bit more (It had already rained earlier). I could hear the rain hit my helmet, but it wasn't bad. It also wasn't pouring. Not bad, but I was extra aware. I've heard the roads are slippery (and putting my foot down once, I could feel it slightly - glad for good boots) plus visibility is more difficult. The oil on the road showed as little round almost rainbows in the middle of the road.

I had my first Passenger/Night/Rain combo on the GTS yesterday. It went quite smoothly, even on the insanely steep hills here. She was a good passenger, even at 200+ pounds. I cannot believe how amazing the brakes are on the GTS. It has front and rear disc breaks with fabulous holding power.
Also got my first cat-call from a construction site this morning. Can't say I mind.

I rode a 50cc scoot for five years and rarely got a wave from other motorcyclists. Yesterday I took my new Piaggio Fly 150 out and got a honk from a passing motorcyclist! I couldn't stop grinning! A great first for me.

Had my first rainy ride a couple days ago. Not as miserable as I'd thought it be. Definitely thinking about a scooter skirt though.
